Monroe Violent Crime Lawyer

Violent crimes carry the potential for the harshest punishments under Louisiana law. Serious violent crimes such as homicide, arson, and armed robbery are punishable by significant fines and long prison sentences. Depending upon the defendant’s conduct and whether and how many victims were injured, a violent crime conviction can lead to decades or even life in prison. Just because you were accused of a violent crime, however, does not mean you’ll be convicted of that crime, or any crime at all.

The passionate Monroe violent crime lawyer at Whiddon Criminal Defense has dedicated years of his practice defending clients charged with serious crimes in Louisiana. Our savvy violent crime defense team knows the law, the evidence and legal arguments that matter, and all the players in the Louisiana criminal justice system–police, prosecutors, courts, medical examiners, and more. If you’ve been accused of a violent crime in Monroe, Louisiana, we’ll help you fight for your freedom and your future.

Louisiana and the Death Penalty

Louisiana is one of a handful of states that still uses capital punishment. Defendants convicted of certain types of homicide (homicide committed during aggravated rape, aggravated arson, or armed robbery, for example) potentially face the death penalty. Louisiana has, however, seen a strong decline in the state’s desire to rely on capital punishment.

Even though the death penalty remains on the books, very few executions actually occur. The last execution in Louisiana was carried out in 2010, more than a decade ago. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that the death penalty cannot be used in non-homicide crimes. Moreover, the Supreme Court previously ruled that Louisiana cannot have a mandatory death penalty even for certain types of murder; the court must have the opportunity to consider mitigating factors. The actual means of execution–the state’s lethal injection procedures–have also been challenged, preventing any executions from actually taking place. It’s important to know that capital punishment is technically an option, but it’s reserved for only the very worst murders and actual execution is unlikely.

If you are facing serious violent crime charges, call a seasoned violent crime defense lawyer at Whiddon Criminal Defense. We’ll help you understand the charges and the potential penalties you are facing, and we’ll work with you to build the strongest defense available against the most serious possible consequences of conviction.
